5.8.2004: Meldung: Fuel Cell Technologies delivers to Hydrogen Village

Fuel Cell Technologies Ltd. (FCT) will deliver four 5kW solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) to the Hydrogen Village at the University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) campus in July 2005. This will represent the first ever installation of fuel cells in Canadian university residences and represents a giant step toward commercialization of FCT’s SOFC technology. The SOFCs will provide electricity and heat for domestic hot water and area heating for townhouse style student residences at the UTM through a “mini-grid” network. The total value of the project including industry contributions is $1.87 million.

The Hydrogen Village in the Greater Toronto Area has been created to showcase hydrogen and fuel cell technologies at key focal points such as the UTM campus. A “mini-grid” is a group of residences, commercial or industrial buildings that are interconnected and serviced by multiple Distributed Generation (DG) units. These facilities may also be connected to the local utility grid that provides electricity to the surrounding area. It is believed that this mini-grid network will be one of the first established anywhere in the world.

The FCT units, which can use several fuels such as natural gas, propane, biogas and methanol, will initially operate on natural gas. The conversion of one or more of the units to hydrogen operation for the last six months of the program will follow. This will demonstrate the ability of FCT’s SOFCs to use hydrogen as their fuel source.

SOFCs reduce pollution emissions and can assist Canada in meeting its emission reduction requirements under the Kyoto protocol. University advisers also believe that small scale generating systems (<250 kWe) can play a significant role in efficiently meeting the power demands of Ontario.

In addition to FCT project sponsors include Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC) h2 Early Adopters (h2EA) program and the University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM).

Ontario Power Generation Inc. is an Ontario-based company, whose principal business is the generation and sale of electricity in Ontario and to interconnected markets. OPG’s focus is on the risk-managed production and sale of electricity from its competitive generation assets, while operating in a safe, open and environmentally responsible manner.

Since 1996, TPC has been focused on helping Canadian companies advance new technologies to the commercialization stage. The h2EA program, which is separate and distinct from the Technology Partnerships Canada research and development program, leads efforts to demonstrate new hydrogen technologies in real-world applications.

Opened in 1967, UTM is one of three campuses of the University of Toronto. UTM is committed to excellence in education and is currently in the midst of unprecedented expansion to enhance the quality and quantity of teaching, research and student space. UTM’s banner for growth – Grow Smart, Grow Green – balances this development with environmental sensitivity and responsibility.

The project was also supported in part by Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. and Air Liquide Canada who committed to support the project through the provision of management and technical expertise in fuel delivery.

Over the last decade, FCT has designed and built custom fuel cell power systems to the technically demanding requirements of world renowned customers, and since 2000 they have brought that exacting quality of work to the development of stationary SOFCs. FCT is now a leading developer and producer of small to medium scale SOFCs, with successful installations around the world. FCT’s research and production facilities are located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
