Multiple Unit Order Combined With NRCan Funding Paves Road to Commercialization
TORONTO, June 9 / Hydrogenics Corporation (Nasdaq: HYGS - News; TSX: HYG - News), a designer and manufacturer of fuel cell technology, today announced that it has sold six of its 10- kilowatt fuel cell power modules -- the HyPM-LP2 -- to Deere & Co. for integration and evaluation in off-road vehicle applications including grounds equipment and utility vehicles.
Hydrogenics also announced that Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is providing $500,000 to fund reliability testing and further development of the HyPM-LP2 over the next two years. This government support is a key driver in advancing Hydrogenics" power module technology toward commercialization.
"John Deere is a great partner for Hydrogenics and we are excited to secure this follow-on order for multiple units," said Hydrogenics President and CEO Pierre Rivard. "We have made tremendous strides over the past year with our power modules and the ePower Technologies group at Deere has worked extremely well with our technology team. This new contract signifies a deepening commitment between the two companies to establish a progressive fuel cell program which will enable both sides to achieve commercialization milestones, better, faster, and more economically. Thanks to NRCan"s support, we continue to develop this clean power technology with partners like John Deere and at the same time maintain Canadian leadership in the emerging hydrogen fuel cell sector."
Deere is the world"s leading producer of equipment for use in agriculture and forestry. Additionally, Deere is a leading producer of equipment used in construction, lawn and turf care and other off road purposes.
"Our electrification initiative has been very successful to date and has served as a strong indicator of what might be possible with fuel cells and other technologies," says Bruce Wood, director of John Deere"s ePower Technologies group. "John Deere has a strong heritage of innovation and we believe that electrification will enable us to add functionality to our products, with the goal of helping our customers meet their work objectives. Our initial fuel cell prototypes and demonstrators are in the light commercial area, however we see much broader application for electrification across all lines of equipment and we are confident strong partners like Hydrogenics will help us achieve exciting objectives for this technology."
The 10 kW HyPM-LP2 fuel cell power module is a direct adaptation of Hydrogenics" 20kW HyPM-LP2 module. Performance and durability testing to date on the HyPM architecture has proven that the "state-of-the-art" design is suited for production in low-volume quantities.
