Veolia WATER, as part of a consortium, wins the design & build contract for the wastewater treatment plant for the TOWN of Angers in France

Paris, July 11, 2006 - The Angers-Loire Métropole Communauté d"Agglomération (Metropolitan Community) has awarded a design & build contract for the new wastewater treatment plant for the town of Angers to Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies subsidiary, OTV France and its partners. This contract, worth a total of around 55 million euros (almost 21 million euros for the share of work going to Veolia Water), includes demolition of the existing plant and construction of a completely new plant on the La Baumette site.

Construction of this new plant has been awarded to a consortium composed of OTV France (Veolia Water), leader of the consortium, Sogea Construction, Sogea Atlantique, Blandin Fonteneau (Eiffage group), IRH and the architects Le Priol and Coquereaumont.

The new plant will cover an area of 90.000 m2. Treatment capacity will be increased to
285,000 e/hr, or 65,000 m3/day, with a peak capacity of 5,500 m3 /hour in wet weather. The technical solution includes primary treatment, secondary treatment by biofiltration using the patented Biostyr® simultaneous nitrification/denitrification process, tertiary treatment for phosphorous, sludge digestion and thermal drying. The plant is to be delivered at the end of 2011.

The quality of the effluent discharged into the Maine River, one kilometer upstream of where it joins the Loire River, will comply with the most stringent European standards for removal of nitrogen and phosphorous compounds. Finally, one of the key factors behind the success of the Veolia water project is the architecture of the plant, which will be perfectly integrated into the landscape at the entrance to the town.

According to Antoine Frérot, Head of the Water Division, "This new plant in Angers is a groundbreaking project for Veolia Water, on both the technical and the environmental levels. Thanks to the state-of-the art solutions chosen, effluent quality will comply fully with the most recent European standards, while at the same time meeting HEQ (High Environmental Quality) requirements."
