Stuart Energy Systems Corporation and Hamilton Sundstrand Space Systems International, Inc., a business unit of United Technologies Corp. today unveiled a jointly developed prototype hydrogen fueling system at the Electric Transportation Industry conference in Florida. The system uses water and electricity to produce pure
hydrogen for vehicle fueling and power applications.

"This automobile hydrogen generation system is a prototype for future refueling stations required throughout the world to accommodate the automotive refueling infrastructure," said Lawrence McNamara, general manager of Hamilton"s Space Systems International enterprise. "Hamilton Sundstrand has more than 150 million cell hours of experience with PEM electrolysis and is the world leader in the military, space and laboratory segments," McNamara said. "Stuart Energy and Hamilton Sundstrand"s aim is to produce hydrogen utilizing renewable resources and demonstrate 100% pollution-free transportation," he added.

The prototype hydrogen fueling system is based on Hamilton Sundstrand"s Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) water electrolysis technology, which Stuart Energy integrated into a fully packaged system. The hydrogen fueling system incorporates the same PEM-cell stack technology that will be utilized by NASA for oxygen generation on the International Space Station. The system is based on a modular build strategy and includes an integrated hydrogen dispenser, compact design and newly developed packaging. The prototype is designed to deliver 1/2 kg of high-purity hydrogen per hour at 5,000 psi. Possible applications for this technology include distributed power, small industrial systems and transportation.

Through the partnership, Stuart Energy is believed to be the only hydrogen infrastructure company with access to both alkaline-based and PEM- based technologies, the two leading electrolyser technologies in hydrogen generation systems. Both companies are exploring the market potential for these technologies, and Stuart Energy sees a place for both alkaline and PEM- based electrolysis.

In September 2002, Stuart Energy and Hamilton Sundstrand announced a strategic alliance to jointly develop PEM-based hydrogen generation products for vehicle fueling, power generation and industrial uses.
