Steelcase"s Environmental Initiatives Recognized by Canada"s Recycling Council of Ontario
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Feb. 12 / Steelcase Inc. (NYSE: SCS - News), an international work effectiveness company whose offerings enhance the quality of people"s lives in work environments, today announced that it was awarded two Ontario Waste Minimization Awards from the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO). Steelcase"s Markham facility in Canada was recognized for its commitment to environmental policies and programs throughout every level of the company.
The Recycling Council of Ontario awarded Steelcase Canada for its focus on reduction initiatives, which includes eliminating paints and adhesives and using exclusively 100% water-based adhesives. In addition, the award recognizes the installation of a new pre-treatment system that enables the reuse of over two million gallons of water annually.
Steelcase Canada was also lauded for shipping its products wrapped in reusable blankets and eliminating packaging wastes. Further, over the past two years Steelcase has reduced their aluminum wastes by 48%, corrugated cardboard by 40%, fabric by 74% and solvents by 76%.

The platinum Business Award was presented to Steelcase Canada for the company"s commitment to environmental protection. The award is granted to companies that demonstrate a reduction in resource and energy requirements, waste materials, and air and water pollution.
Steelcase Canada was also recognized with the Environmentally-Sustainable Business Award, which was selected from the Business Award finalists. The top prize was awarded to Steelcase based on several criteria, including its ability to adopt environmental policies at all levels of the company and track the progress of the policies through comprehensive reporting. The prize also recognizes Steelcase"s environmental employee education programs.
The Ontario Waste Minimization Awards are part of the Recycling Council of Ontario"s Waste Reduction Week held in Canada. This event, October 20-26, is intended to raise public awareness regarding waste and its environmental and social ramifications.
