Compact Flywheel System to Protect U.S. Data Center

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 15 -- Active Power, Inc. today announced an order from Eaton Powerware for twelve 500 kW DC flywheel systems. These units will ship in the first half of 2006 and be used to upgrade the power infrastructure of an existing data center in the United States.

Active Power"s DC flywheel products offer customers several advantages over traditional battery-based systems including lower total cost, higher reliability, smaller footprint, temperature insensitivity, longer life and lower maintenance. Due to its extremely small footprint, the DC flywheel allows existing data centers to take advantage of high-density servers and dedicate more floor space to computing. Providing 500 kW in just 14 square feet, Active Power"s DC flywheel is well over four times more power dense than a typical battery installation.

"This order certainly highlights a trend we are seeing in the data center world," said Jim Clishem, President and COO of Active Power. "Power requirements are increasing exponentially, and the data centers built during the late 90"s simply aren"t equipped to handle it. Our flywheel-based solutions allow for growth without absorbing valuable raised floor space. This 6 MW order, along with the 11 MW order we received late last month, represent more flywheel units than we shipped in any quarter last year."
