17.4.2008: Meldung: Green Mountain Coffee Launches New Line of Coffees
Green Mountain Coffee, the coffee division of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc., has launched a new line of Single Origin coffees. Beans for these coffees are sourced from the finest growing regions in the world and are produced by farms with whom Green Mountain Coffee has cultivated direct relationships. Selections in the Single Origin line include: Colombian Fair Trade Select, Guatemalan Finca Dos Marias™, Kenyan Highland Cooperatives, Mexican Decaf Huatusco Cooperative, Sumatran Lake Tawar, and Tanzanian Gombe Reserve.
This new line of coffees ties into consumer trends showing increased interest in where one’s food comes from, how it’s grown and how it’s prepared. Single Origin coffees also appeal to the growing segment of coffee lovers who appreciate the effects of terroir, or how regional differences in climate, growing methods and social conditions influence taste characteristics in the cup.
Coffees from each of these six countries exhibit region-specific qualities, which are highlighted by special roasting. “We roast the Guatemalan coffee lightly to accentuate its brightness, its innate depth of flavor and its lovely, full body,” says Lindsey Bolger, Director of Coffee Sourcing and Relationships for Green Mountain Coffee. “The Kenyan coffee reaches its full potential with a medium roast accentuating its fine-bodied, classic berry and citrus notes. Coffees this distinctive,” she said, “need to be crafted with care.”
Kenneth Davids of the independent Coffee Review evaluated three Single Origin coffees, awarding a rating of 96 for Kenyan Highland Cooperatives, an 89 for Sumatran Lake Tawar, and a 90 for Tanzanian Gombe Reserve. Davids assesses coffees using a 100-point scale. Coffee connoisseurs look for a score of 80 or above.
The Tanzanian Gombe Reserve coffee is sourced in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute. This coffee is grown by small-scale farmers near Tanzania’s Gombe National Park, where Dr. Goodall did her groundbreaking research on chimpanzee behavior. Much of the land around the park has become deforested, threatening one of the last remaining habitats for wild chimpanzees. Growing coffee helps provide a solution because coffee plants thrive under the shade of the forest canopy, which is also vital to the chimps’ survival. Coffee farming gives farmers an incentive to preserve the forest and a chance at economic stability. Tanzanian Gombe Reserve is also the first product to receive Jane Goodall"s "Good for All" seal of approval, which is reserved for high-quality products produced with a commitment to fair pay for farmers, sustainable agriculture, and wildlife conservation.
All of the Single Origin cooperatives and farms employ progressive farm management principles and have a direct supply chain relationship with Green Mountain Coffee. In addition, four of the six coffees are Fair Trade Certified™, meaning small-scale farmers are paid a fair price for their beans, enabling them to invest in the quality of their coffee and quality of life in their communities.
