17.6.2004: Meldung: Wild Oats Markets Donates $10,000 to Ecological Fund

Wild Oats Markets, Inc., a leading national natural and organic foods retailer, today announced it will donate $10,000 to TreeUtah to fund the replanting of native species of plants along the Jordan River Parkway, which will help restore migratory songbird habitat. The official grand opening of the store at 3736 West Center Park Drive in the Jordan Landing shopping center in West Jordan, will take place on Wednesday, June 16 at 8:45 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"TreeUtah has a long-term commitment to rebuilding migratory songbird habitat by guiding volunteer-driven riparian restoration along the Jordan River. TreeUtah also educates people all around the state to value and care for our urban and community forests," said Justina Parsons-Bernstein, Executive Director of TreeUtah. "We are so pleased with Wild Oats"" generous donation because it will help us plant thousands of native tree and shrub seedlings along the Jordan River and also help provide appropriate trees to communities near the new Wild Oats Store which will shade, cool and beautify those areas."

As part of the Company""s mission to promote health and well-being among customers, employees, local communities and the environment, Wild Oats is providing funding for TreeUtah, in partnership with the Great Salt Lake Audubon, to conduct ecological restoration of lowland riparian woodlands along the Jordan River Parkway. Wild Oats employees will help with the planting. Local biologists estimate that about 100 species of birds in Utah require lowland riparian habitat. If this habitat disappears from the state, these 100 species of birds will also disappear. Wild Oats"" donation will also be used to fund TreeUtah""s tree planting grants and educational programs, including community tree care workshops.

"We are extremely pleased to partner with a community organization that is dedicated to the long-term environmental health of Utah, by planting and caring for trees," said Perry Odak, President and CEO of Wild Oats Markets. "Wild Oats Markets is known for its community involvement, especially in the area of protecting our environment, and we look forward to many more partnerships to support the people of the Salt Lake City area."

The official grand opening celebration begins at 8:45 a.m. on June 16, when West Jordan Store Director Mark Regni will open the store to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The opening day festivities will continue with storewide samples and the kickoff of a grocery giveaway in which 500 randomly selected customers will win a bag of pre-selected groceries over the first five weeks the store is open.

The June 16 grand opening celebration will kick-off several weeks of storewide samples, community support programs and various health-related store events.

The Wild Oats Natural Marketplace is a full-service specialty food store that will feature the highest quality natural, organic and gourmet food, dietary supplements, chemical-free household and body care products available. The company""s charitable giving programs will include several 5% Days each year, whereby five percent of the store""s total sales for the day are donated to a local nonprofit group. The first 5% Day for the new Wild Oats store will be held on Monday, June 28, 2004 and will provide funds for TreeUtah. Additionally, to encourage recycling and reusing grocery bags, customers who bring their own bags to the store receive either a 5-cent refund or a Wooden Nickel for each bag, which is then donated to one of three local nonprofit groups.
