21.11.2002: Meldung: Spire Corporation provides Homes with PV Systems
Wednesday November 20, 12:52 pm ET
BEDFORD, Mass.--Nov. 20, 2002--Spire Corporation (Nasdaq: SPIR - News) announced that its Spire Solar Chicago operation has been contracted to provide solar photovoltaic electric systems on twelve new single-family homes to be constructed in the Chicago metropolitan area. These systems will be placed on the "New Homes for South Chicago", an affordable housing development in the southeastern part of the City. Each system of 1,200 watts is expected to provide about one quarter of the electricity for each energy efficient house designed by Sam Marts Architects and Planners and developed by Claretian Associates. This will be the first single-family housing development in the Chicago/Midwest area to have photovoltaic systems.
Mr. Stephen Hogan, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Spire Solar, stated, "The New Homes for South Chicago project is another step by the City of Chicago and Spire Solar Chicago toward making Chicago one of the greenest cities in the United States. As builders and developers in Chicago see photovoltaic systems as a part of new housing developments, they will become more comfortable having them in their own projects."
Ms. Kathy Kelleher, Project Manager for Claretian Associates, Inc. stated, "Claretian Associates recognizes the innovation of being able to offer photovoltaic systems - money- saving green technology - as part of its affordable New Homes for South Chicago project. Claretian Associates jumped at the opportunity to partner with Spire Solar Chicago, Commonwealth Edison, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs and the Chicago Departments of Environment and Housing to make this innovation a reality for moderate income, first-time homebuyers in the City of Chicago. As homebuyers at all income levels learn the benefits of solar and other green technology, the solar electric systems industry will play an increasingly significant role in creating healthful living environments in and outside our homes."
Spire Solar Chicago has provided solar electric systems having over 600,000 peak watts on over 25 installations in Chicago, including seven of the City"s major museums and eight Chicago public school buildings. Spire manufactures solar electric modules and designs systems at the Chicago Center for Green Technology, located on the City"s West Side.
Funding sources for these systems include the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs, Chicago Department of Environment and ComEd. These organizations, along with Spire, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Community Energy Cooperative, the Chicago Public Schools and BP Solar, make up the Chicago Solar Partnership, whose mission is to remove barriers and encourage the use of solar energy in Chicago. Funding was also provided by the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. For further information on the Chicago Solar Partnership, visit www.chicagosolarpartners.org.
