The prestigious award was presented at a special ceremony in Berlin on the opening day of the European Conference for Renewable Energy "Intelligent Policy Options", organized under the high patronage of Loyola de Palacio, Vice President of the European Commission, Commissioner for Energy and Transport. ST received the prize for its program to achieve an objective of 15% of renewable energy sources by 2010.
The annual Campaign for Take-Off Award competition was designed to reward the commitment and significant achievements made by the Renewable Energy Partners and to showcase successful projects and initiatives all over Europe. For the 2003 awards, 3 or 4 candidates for each of the 8 categories (see appendix 2) were evaluated by a panel of 7 judges chaired by the expert adviser to the European Commissioner for Energy and Transport, and comprising an interdisciplinary range of specialists including 2 Members of the European Parliament, an architect, a journalist, a mayor and a specialist in green power. In selecting the winners for each category, the jury examined the achievements of the candidates compared to the targets set within the scope of the competition. The jury recognized the high interest, sustainable and long-term approach of the industrial group in five European countries. The awards ceremony in Berlin marks the fourth and final occasion of the competition, and the completion of the Campaign for Take-Off, paving the way for a new campaign to begin in 2004.
Receiving the award on behalf of ST, Georges Auguste, Corporate Vice President, Director of Total Quality and Environmental Management at STMicroelectronics, said, "This is a huge tribute to the persistent and dedicated effort undertaken within our organization towards a sustainable future for our society. As a company deeply committed to social and environmental awareness, we recognize the crucial role that renewable energy has to play in minimizing environmental damage and climate change. We fully support the European Commission"s renewable energy initiatives and will continue to actively participate in future campaigns."
Renewable Energy Sources make a major contribution to sustainable development and, through using local available resources, to security of energy supply. ST has a long-established commitment towards sustainable development, with a strong corporate culture based on integrity, people and values. In 1995, the company published its first Environmental Decalogue, a set of ten quantified, timed and measurable targets with the aim of achieving environmental neutrality. The Decalogue outlines the Company"s goals for water and energy conservation, reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, chemical usage, pollution and waste, and proactively encourages employees, customers and suppliers to be environmentally aware while continuously monitoring progress. On successful completion of the first edition, the revised version in 1999 set even more aggressive targets, in particular the highly ambitious goal to be CO2-neutral by the year 2010.
ST has made considerable progress towards achieving this goal by following a strategy based on reducing energy consumption while increasingly sourcing energy from alternative and renewable sources, and on the Carbon Offset program in which reforestation allows the absorption of carbon from the atmosphere. The company plans to source a greater percentage of energy from combined heat and power (cogeneration) plants which are more efficient and emit less CO2 per unit of energy, and from renewable energies such as wind and solar, which emit no CO2. By 2010, ST aims to have an energy mix of 55% coming from cogeneration, 30% conventional sources and 15% coming from renewable sources. This will limit the Company"s CO2 emissions to the annual level of 2000 during the next 10 years, despite its growth. ST is developing in parallel a Carbon Offset (reforestation) program aiming to neutralize the remaining carbon emissions. With the implementation of this program, ST is contributing to the fulfillment of the European Community objective for renewable energy by 2010, which is to have a share of 12% renewable energy in gross inland energy consumption.
About the Campaign for Take-Off for Renewable Energies
The Campaign for Take-Off for Renewable Energies was created in 1999 by the European Commission as a key initiative among its promotional measures to foster market penetration of renewable energies within the European Community. Running until the end of 2003, 125 renewable energy programs and projects involving more than 700 organizations and institutions in the European Union, joined the Campaign as Renewable Energy Partners on a voluntary basis, bringing together all the programs undertaken in the renewable energy sector. Its aims were to provide quantitative targets for each of the renewable energy sectors covered by the Campaign (see appendix 1) to serve as benchmarks for decision makers and planners within the industry, and to support local communities that are planning for 100% energy provision from renewable energy sources.
