Boston Edison Company Declares Preferred Stock Dividends

BOSTON-- Dec. 18, 2003--NSTAR (NYSE:NST - News) announced today that its Board of Trustees voted to increase the dividend on its common shares to an annual rate of $2.22 per share, a 2.8 percent increase over the previous rate of $2.16. The Board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.555 per share. This is the Company"s 459th consecutive dividend, payable February 1, 2004 to shareholders of record January 9, 2004. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. May said, "The board"s action to increase the common dividend for the sixth consecutive year is a clear signal to the financial community that the Board remains confident in NSTAR"s long-term financial prospects. We are proud of NSTAR"s track record of being among the best in the industry with respect to customer service and system reliability while also delivering consistent dividend and earnings growth."

Also, the Board of Directors of Boston Edison Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of NSTAR, declared the following preferred stock dividends payable February 1, 2004 to holders of record January 9, 2004:
A quarterly dividend of $1.0625 per share on the Company"s cumulative preferred stock, 4.25% series; and
A quarterly dividend of $1.195 per share on the Company"s cumulative preferred stock, 4.78% series.
