27.2.2003: Meldung: Horizon wants to keep USDA-Standards

Horizon Organic Holding Corporation (Nasdaq: HCOW - News), which markets the leading brand of organic foods, today announced its support of Congressional efforts to repeal a last-minute provision added to the 2003 federal spending bill, also known as the Omnibus Appropriations Act. The Bill, passed by Congress on February 13, 2003, contains a hidden provision that would allow the labeling of food products as "organic," even if livestock producers have not fed their livestock certified- organic grain. In response, Congressional co-sponsors* today introduced the Organic Restoration Act, which, if passed, will abolish the provision and uphold the integrity of the USDA standards, which took more than a decade to establish.

"This special interest exemption undermines the previously set USDA national organic standards by weakening the requirements for 100 percent organic feed," said Chuck Marcy, president and CEO of Horizon Organic. "As pioneers in the push for federal organic standards, Horizon Organic will remain true to the stringent national organic program regulations that define the term "organic" and provide peace of mind for consumers."

Under the provision included within the new Omnibus Appropriations Act, when the commercial price of organic feed is twice the price of conventional feed, the USDA cannot enforce regulations requiring that livestock be given only organic feed. This would effectively eliminate the implementation of clear and consistent labeling laws for organic foods. To this end, Horizon Organic applauds the effort to repeal the provision and ensure the validity of the organic market.

All Horizon Organic products are certified organic and grown and processed without the use of harmful pesticides, antibiotics, growth hormones, or genetically modified ingredients. Regardless of the language in the Omnibus Appropriations Act, Horizon Organic and its many producer partners will continue to provide the high- quality organic foods their customers have come to expect, and will adhere to the strict standards fought for by both producers and purchasers of organic foods.
