Spire Appoints David R. Lipinski as CFO

BEDFORD, Mass.-- Aug. 27, 2003--Spire Corporation (Nasdaq: SPIR - News), which provides products and services based upon a common technology platform to the biomedical and solar energy industries worldwide, today announced the appointment of David R. Lipinski as Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Lipinski brings over twenty years of financial management and corporate development experience including corporate finance, strategic planning, transaction execution and international business development gained in advanced technology businesses and a financial institution.
Roger Little, President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Mr. Lipinski brings to Spire the kind of high-powered financial management skills that the Company needs. His experience in corporate finance, as well as strategic planning and execution, will prove invaluable for Spire"s financial performance and growth. Most recently, Mr. Lipinski was Vice President at Stratos Lightwave, Inc., an optoelectronics technology business that was "carved out" from Methode Electronics in an IPO during 2000. Prior to that IPO, he had been a corporate development executive with Methode Electronics, Inc., a manufacturer of industrial and automotive electronic components and controls. His experience includes assignments as a Vice President at Comarco, Inc., a communications electronics business, and as a Vice President at Continental Bank (now Bank of America) focused on financial services for advanced technology businesses. Mr. Lipinski is also a director of Optelecom, Inc., a publicly traded optoelectronics technology business serving the security, transportation and defense industries.
Mr. Lipinski graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy with a B.S. in Physics and holds an M.B.A. in Finance from the University of New Haven. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a registered Professional Engineer. Mr. Lipinski is a native of Chicago and a resident of Lake Forest, Illinois.
