5.10.205: Meldung: Veolia Environnement SA: Onyx acquires Shanks Group Plc"s Hazardous Waste Business

Onyx becomes the leading hazardous waste management company in the UK having acquired Shanks Group Plc"s Hazardous Waste Business

Onyx, the Waste Management Division of Veolia Environnement, has just purchased Shanks Group’s UK hazardous waste operations (collection, sorting, transfer, treatment and disposal) for ?41 million (?28million).

This strategic long term investment is stimulated by the introduction of the Landfill Directive in the UK and by the very strict new regulations applied to all industries including the chemical and pharmaceutical industry that require more treatment and disposal of growing volumes of hazardous waste. Onyx’s market share has thus increased from 21% to 33%, making it the leading company in this sector in the United Kingdom.

According to Denis Gasquet, CEO of Onyx "This strategic investment marks a decisive stage in the development of our group in the United Kingdom since it will position us as the leading hazardous waste specialist. Onyx is showing the way towards an improved model for European hazardous waste management which will be of equal benefit to our private and public partners. By offering our customers a global solution, we can assure them of an efficient processing system in accordance with the strictest environmental standards."

The acquisition includes 6 chemical treatment sites, 7 transfer stations and a high temperature incinerator and waste to energy plant, the former being one of only two merchant facilities that are operational in the United Kingdom. A dedicated transport fleet and an experienced workforce of some 300 employees support these facilities.

In 2004, Onyx UK posted revenue of ?670 million.

Onyx, Veolia Environnement’s waste management division, is the only operator that provides solid, liquid, non-hazardous and hazardous waste management solutions to both local communities and industry. Its 71,000 employees in 34 countries provide waste management and logistics services, including collection, wastewater management, cleaning and flow control, and treatment and recovery of waste. Onyx posted sales of 6.2 billion euros in 2004.

Veolia Environnement (Paris Euronext: VIE and NYSE: VE) is world leader in environmental services. The company has operations all around the world and provides tailored solutions to meet the needs of industrial and municipal customers in four complementary segments: water management, waste management, energy management and passenger transportation. Veolia Environnement recorded revenue of ?24.7 billion in 2004 and has 250,000 employees.
