8.7.2005: Meldung: Carmanah Technologies Corp.: Canada"s first solar-powered bus shelter
Wednesday July 6, 10:00 am ET
TORONTO, July 6 / Art Aylesworth, CEO of Carmanah Technologies Inc. (TSX Venture: CMH - News), today unveiled Canada"s first solar-powered bus shelter. The shelter - at the Etobicoke Civic Centre - is the first of a total of 350 Carmanah i-SHELTER(TM) units being installed throughout Greater Toronto in July.
Says Aylesworth: "Behind the scenes, the i-SHELTER(TM) is an alternative energy solution that promotes ridership and energy conservation while saving taxpayers money. For commuters, it simply means better lighting and a safer, more enjoyable trip home from work."
Carmanah"s solar-powered technology offers a myriad of advantages over conventional hard-wired, grid-powered lighting. The LED-based (light-emitting diode) systems require 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs and can operate for up to 100,000 hours before replacement. They offer uninterrupted performance, even during major power outages. Installation is simple and low-cost: no digging or trenching, no electrical permits, and no traffic disruption. Once installed, the lights draw all their energy from the sun and require minimal maintenance.
"When we talk about alternative energy and transportation, most people think of changing the way we power vehicles," says Aylesworth. "But solar- powered transit lighting is a cost-effective alternative; it consumes no electricity and - by encouraging people to ride transit - it cuts vehicle emissions."
Toronto"s use of the i-SHELTER(TM) fits with Ontario"s overall environmental agenda. The provincial government plans to curb electricity consumption by 5% by the year 2007, while the City of Toronto has committed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20% from 1990 levels.
The Toronto Transit Commission - the largest transit agency in Canada, with 1.4 million riders per day - joins over 90 progressive transit authorities worldwide that use Carmanah"s solar-powered bus shelter lighting. In 2002, London, England became the first city to install the i-SHELTER(TM) technology. In the past year alone, London"s bus ridership has risen by 7.3% while night service has increased by 16%.
