Abengoa defends bioethanol in Europe

Abengoa, a leading company in the bioethanol industry through its business unit Abengoa Bioenergy, is being subjected first-hand to the debate regarding “green fuels” which has arisen in various circles.

In relation to this situation, Abengoa has taken the decision to carry out, for the first time in its history, a corporate campaign in major daily broadsheet and financial press, as well as their respective on line editions in the Netherlands, Belgium, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain in order to defend bioethanol and the bioethanol producing companies.

The strategy of the campaign focuses on counteracting the numerous lies regarding bioethanol and its industry, and to refute them with documented evidence. Abengoa contradicts the recently spread manipulations with data and verifiable facts.

The alleged impact of the use of green fuels in the soaring price of basic raw materials, and, therefore, food; the hypothetical increase in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels; the deforestation of tropical rainforests; and their involvement in the loss of biodiversity, are some of the bogus arguments that have been used to attack bioethanol and, as an extension, bioethanol producing companies.

Over the last few months, the interests of international petroleum companies, the statements of political leaders, the reports of intergovernmental political institutions (OECD and FAO), and the interests of those who supposedly defend the environment have been pointing directly to the bioethanol industry as a scapegoat to a structural problem. Although many people would like others to believe, that this comes from long back, in fact it has been aggravated in recent years by, amongst other factors, agricultural policies, delays in regulatory matters and notably by the growth of global demand for food from developing countries.

For Javier Salgado, president of Abengoa Bioenergy, "... various economic and political interests insist on making us out to be the main culprits of almost all the problems in the world today. The debate is unfounded, since the data demonstrates a completely contrasting reality. This is the truth that we want to convey to the public opinion. Therefore, we have decided to take action with this important corporate campaign."

Abengoa Bioenergy, one of Abengoa´s business groups, is Europe's largest bioethanol producer and the only global producer with supporting operations in the US and Brazil. Abengoa is a technological company that applies innovative solutions for sustainable development in the infrastructures, environment and energy sectors, and is present in more than 70 countries. Abengoa's portfolio of products includes solar energy and bioethanol production, hydrogen technologies, construction of renewable energy facilities, water desalination, recycling of industrial waste, and IT consultation and systems development.
