Abengoa, the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, has been chosen by ACWA Power International to develop a desalination plant using reverse osmosis technology in Barka, Oman. The project, of total value of US$ 55 million, will have the capacity to supply more than 225,000 inhabitants.

Abengoa will be responsible for the design, engineering and construction of the plant, as well as its subsequent operation and maintenance support.

The plant, which is located in Barka in the north east part of the country in the Gulf of Oman, will have the capacity to desalinate 45,000 m3 of water per day using reverse osmosis technology, drawing feed water from one of the heat exchangers of the cooling system of the existing integrated energy and water production facility.

The Barka reverse osmosis desalination plant is part of the plan launched by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) to ensure the availability of water resources around the country.

This project will increase Abengoa’s installed water desalination capacity to more than 760,000 m3 per day, sufficient to supply drinking water to eight million people. Its technology contributes to resolving the serious lack of drinking water in several countries around the world, encouraging their global development.

This project contributes to Abengoa continuing to consolidate its position as a world leader in the water sector adding Oman to the list of Algeria, Ghana, India, China and Spain where it has already developed desalination plants.
