20.12.2002: Meldung: Accident with Vestas turbine in Germany

On 18 December 2002, an accident occurred in connection with the installation and start up of a Vestas V80-2.0 MW turbine near Schneeberg in Germany. The accident caused material damage, only. The accident occurred in low wind speed during routine test of the turbine"s safety system. The turbine was installed, but not yet started up.

In connection with the testing of the turbine"s automatic emergency stop function, a break occurred on the foundation ring, which made the turbine turn over. The turbine has not been overloaded and no failures in the safety system or otherwise on the turbine have been identified.
The break on the foundation ring has occurred due to an unauthorised welding correction, which has been carried out during the manufacture of the foundation ring. This has reduced ductility of the material and consequently caused the accident.
The welding correction has been performed by a specific sub-supplier. The preliminary investigations show that the correction is a one-off situation.

Vestas emphasises that this type of failure never has occurred before, however, the procedure for certification and quality control of foundation rings will be reviewed.
